Regent: Varsity Champions!
Each year the four Leicester City Colleges; QE, Regent, Gateway and Leicester College, meet at the University of Leicester Sports Campus to take part in Varsity, a multi-sports day event with tournaments in men’s and women’s 5 aside football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s badminton, men’s cricket and mixed volleyball.
In Summer 2015 Regent became Varsity champions, with a string of outstanding sporting performances.
Summary: The competition started with opening ceremony performances from Studio 79 Dance College, who work in partnership with Regent College to deliver an extended diploma in dance. Their performance was faultless, highlighting how much hard work the Studio 79 Dance group had put into the routine, and the natural talent of the dancers involved. Throughout the day students could try their luck at cardio tennis, netball, and the most anticipated game of Zorb Bubble football, this was without question the biggest hit! The competition also included Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Rugby and there were events for male and female teams throughout the day. In the final reckoning Regent College ran out winners after some outstanding individual and team performances.
Varsity 2014 Summary: Around 180 students took part in the varsity with over 40 students from each college in attendance. Emphasis was on participation and leadership rather than elite performance, however the level of competition was very high across all events, and all sports were played in great spirit. In the opening ceremony students enjoyed a performance from Studio 79 Dance College, who work in partnership with Regent College to deliver an extended diploma in dance. Throughout the day table tennis tables, volleyball nets and a golf inflatable were provided on site for students to pick up and have a go with.
Highlights from the event included a recently formed Regent College women’s football team battling it out in a final against Gateway; Ryan Bray, a Sports Ambassador , displaying outstanding leadership skills whilst refereeing the men’s 5 aside tournament , and Regent College, despite being the smallest of the four colleges, entering two successful teams into the Cricket tournament.
The Varsity was jointly organised by the three newly appointed College Sport Makers within the city, consisting of Alice Kempski (Regent & QE), Kay Searcy (Leicester College) and Jon Dick (Gateway). Support from the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball and Golf associations enabled the competitions and pick up and play activities to run smoothly. In addition support from the School Sport Partnership and Leicester City Council Sports Regeneration Group helped fund the event and the running of things behind the scenes. Leicester University generously provided use of their excellent facilities and support from their staff. Varsity, as a multi-sport day event, will be an annual occasion for the 4 City colleges. We hope that next year more sports and more students will be involved, as the colleges battle it out for the title once more.
